The Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School is the biggest school which came into existence during the departments and schools reorganization in June, 2002. Its 8 institutes are: Civil Law Institute, Commercial Law Institute, Civil Procedure Law Institute, Intellectual Property Law Institute, Fiscal Revenue and Finance Law Institute, and Labor and Social Security Law Institute. In addition, there are 4 administrative units.
School Office, Teaching and Research Office, Postgraduate Office and Students' Affairs Office. Focusing on teaching, research as well as disciplinary construction, the school is aiming at its goal of ¡°top-ranking in faculty, scientific research, professional training and fame¡±. To be specific, while serving the economic construction and inter-disciplinary cooperation on basis of its second-class disciplines, it will expand to third-class disciplines, and combine basic principles with applicable research, so as to explore topics on the cutting edge of current economic construction and legal construction. In that process it will gradually form its own advantage, feature, style and character.
The dean is Professor Wang Weiguo, doctoral advisor in Civil, Commercial and Economic Law.
II. Disciplinary Construction
The school is the largest academic group in Civil, Commercial and Economic Law in China, as it has 4 disciplines for its master and doctorate candidates, i.e. Civil and Commercial Law, Economic Law, Environmental Law and Civil Procedure Law. By driving disciplinary construction forward, the school spares no effort in improving its academic image. All its institutes are making plans to ensure a considerable advancement by the end of 2010.
The school currently has 17 doctorate advisors and 95 master advisors. It has also engaged 51 professors as its guests teacher from Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
III. Research Staff
The school always attaches great importance to the construction of its research group. On the basis of existing disciplines, it has founded an interdisciplinary, high-qualified and featured academic staff. Now, among the 117 teachers, there are 27 professors, 67 associate professors, 21 instructors and 3 assistants. Their age distribution is: 26 teachers being less than 35 years old, 65 between the age of 36 and 45, and 27 above 46. Their title distribution is: 54 with doctorate degrees and 7 in pursuing it, 91 with master or doctor's degree, and 25 being bachelors. From their origins, 73 are graduates of CUPL and 45 are from other educational institutions.
The school is home of many domestic top-ranking and world famous jurists, who hold a significant academic position in their own fields and enjoy high reputation and honor around the world. For instance, Professor Jiang Ping is one of the most renowned jurists in China, Professor Wu Changzhen used to be the vice president of Chinese Law Institute and president of the Chinese Marital Law Institute; Wang Weiguo, Zhao Xudong and Fu Qilin are the vice chairman of the Civil law Institute, Commercial Law Institute and Economic Law Institute respectively; Professor Xia Yinlan is the incumbent president of the Marital Law Institute of the Chinese Law Association. It is still worth mentioning that Professor Wang Weiguo has been one of the main lecturers for the law lectures to the top leaders of the Central Party Committee, and Professor Zhao Xudong has been chosen as one of ¡°the Ten Prominent Jurists¡± in its third election.
IV. Professional Training
The school has witnessed noted success in the trial of new training mould for undergraduates. Through the tryout of legal clinic educating method, students have developed the ability to tackle practical problems and improved their comprehensive quality thereby. For the graduates, the school provides various pre-employment training and instruction to solve their problems both in thoughts and psychology.
For its graduates, the school exhibits a high academic quality by straightening its academic atmosphere and abiding by its strict academic norms. Above 1500 undergraduates, 1000 masters and 200 doctors have been graduated from this school.
V. Research Programs and Achievement
Attaching much impotence to scientific research, teachers of the school actively apply for various research programs and are now undertaking 6 programs of the National Social Sciences Fund, 3 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, 3 from the Ministry of Justice, and 5 of the Excellent Young Teachers Fund. Science its founding in December of 2004, teachers of the school have published 495 academic papers, 52 works of monographs, 17 translated books and 18 articles, as well as 104 text books and 12 reference books. Six professors have won the National Outstanding Teaching Material Award of Ministry of Education and Prominent Teaching and Scientific Research Achievements Award of Ministry of Justice. Their are Fei Anling, Jiang Ping, Liu Xinwen, Shi Jianzhong, Zhang Junhao and Zhao Xudong.
The teachers also made great contributions to the country's legislation by taking part in the institution and amendment of the General Principles of Civil Law, Marital law, Corporation Law, Bankruptcy Law and other main works of legislation.
VI. Academic Exchange
In recent years, as its main academic activities, the school has successfully held two series of forums. One is the Chinese Civil Code Forum, which found great giants echo in the society with its 10 sessions since 2002. The other is the Autumn Forums, which are divided into speeches by units on seven special topics, of Civil Law, Commercial Law, Economic Law, Fiscal Revenue & Financial Law, Science of Intellectual Law, Science of Labor and Social Security Law and Environmental Law and Science of Civil Procedure Law.
To enhance the academic communication, a special website has been launched, that is, Civil, Commercial and Economic Law Net of CUPL (CCELAWS). Logging in this website, one can find many columns such as Peak Dialogue, Civil Law, Commercial Law, Procedure Law, News and Comments on Books, Chosen Works on Special Topics, Academic Special Zone for Undergraduates and Postgraduates, Front Report, News of the Academic Circle and BBS. Here one can also enjoy the convenience of brief search for papers, collection of scholars' works and swift release of news in legislation and judicature. In addition, the school's hosts two academic publications: Comments on Civil, Commercial and Economic Law and Comments on Corporation Law.
With respect to academic exchange, the school has established relationships in contacts and cooperation with law schools of quite a number of universities in Italy, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Australia and Hong Kong. Many teachers from the school have been invited to attend overseas symposiums and 3 were offered the financial support to study abroad by Fulbright Foundation or other Foundation. Meanwhile, at the invitation of teachers in this school, overseas scholars have been here many times to give lectures. In March, 2005, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the Italian president awarded Medal of Republic of Italy to the school's Lifetime Professor Jiang Ping and Knight of Republic of Italy Medals to Professor Fei Anling and Professor Ding Mei as commendation for their contributions in the research and spreading of Roman law and research of Italian law.
